COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR PETRA'S BLOG

by

The past year has truly been one to remember, thanks to the most fun job I've had and probably will ever have. This is why I’m definitely feeling a bit bittersweet about having to leave all of this behind, but I'm sure that KY's communications will be left in great hands. There are not many workplaces where you get to experience the types of things that come along with working at KY, while simultaneously be granted so much responsibility at such a young age!

Before working as the Communications coordinator I was in charge of communications-related matters in a few volunteer positions at KY and I enjoyed these positions so much that I knew I would have the motivation to do the same types of tasks here as my job. My duties have revolved mainly around KY's internal and external communications and the biggest projects I’ve got to be in charge of were planning and designing the KY Guide for every new student at Aalto BIZ, as well as the coordination of certain event entities that reach thousands of students (e.g. Wappu and the Autumn Festival Week). In addition to these, I am responsible for KY’s newsletter and social media content so during the year I got to do lots of editing and also utilize KY’s updated brand in the editing process!

As the communications coordinator you will get to work together with everyone from the KY office and tons of KY's volunteers, since communications are basically related to everything and everyone. As a people person this has been extremely fun! To be more precise, you will get to work closely with the following KY office members:

  • Board member responsible for Communications: Probably pretty obvious, you two will share the responsibilities of creating and posting content for KY's communications channels, social media channels and website, and also utilizing and instructing the use of KY's renewed brand. It's definitely more fun to throw around ideas relating to KY's communications with someone who shares an interest in this rather than having to do things all alone.
  • Board member responsible for Master's Students: The two of you will become partners in crime in leading KY's Masters' committee. This includes recruiting and training committee members and organizing memorable events both with and for your committee!
  • KY's Art Director: The two of you will be responsible for some of KY's publications like the KY Guide and KY's Annual report. Some of your tasks might be pretty similar and since both of you will be or become pros at editing, you can help each other out if one if having more hectic of a work week!
  • KY's two other service advisors (Culture producer and Association coordinator): I truly hope that the three of you will become a close and efficient trio. You will be responsible for selling KY merch and helping KY's volunteers with any questions the might have relating to premises or services.

In addition to getting to work together with so many amazing, motivated and like-minded people, the best thing about working at KY has definitely been the fact that in almost a year there has never been a day when I wasn’t excited to go to work. The atmosphere in Espilä is super welcoming and each day at work is different, which is especially great for someone like me who easily gets bored of just doing one thing for a long time. The working hours are flexible, so your'e definitely able to study alongside working if you wish to do so and still enjoy some free time.

Another part of my job that is definitely worth mentioning separately is getting to be the Vice chair of KY’s Masters’ Committee. And don’t worry if you’re still a bachelor's student and being in MC sounds a bit weird, it did to me too at first. But everyone in both MC’21 and MC’22 have been absolutely amazing people and I’ve enjoyed every moment I’ve got to spend with both of these committees! <3

Comments from Laura, Board member responsible for Communications:

'When my journey as a member of the KY Board started in January, I faced the need to plan a few new projects and things to do during the year 2022, as many big projects in the communications sector had already been finished by the end of the year 2021. I have been especially grateful that I got a chance to work with Petra and throw ideas on how to develop KY communications further, as it would otherwise have taken me much more time to decide on how to fill the “partially empty canvas”. Our days have been full of joyful laughter at the open office, learning with enormous speed and, without a doubt, tons of liters of coffee. I realized quite immediately that I would not change any of those moments. All in all, it has been a fun journey to be a part of the biggest and the best sector. ;)

I’m truly looking forward to welcoming the new communications coordinator to “Piireistä parhain” in August!'

Comments from Maria, Board member responsible for Master’s Students:

'Without Petra my start at the board and with a new committee wouldn’t have been as smooth and enjoyable as it has been. Together we’ve gotten to recruit our amazing committee, support committee members, and organize fun activities for them, to name a few things. Having Petra as my partner in crime has meant always having someone to bounce ideas off and rely on. In short, my time in the KY Office wouldn’t be half as fun without Petra!'

If you have any questions regarding my position, don’t hesitate to contact me!
