Another Year, Another Slay

Hello everyone, I'm Tilda Leikola. As my second year at the KY Board is coming to an end, I wanted to share a few ideas of the year together. This year as the chairperson, my role has involved being the face of KY, supporting my fellow board members and our Executive Director, and guiding KY towards our long-term goals. 

This year has been full of memorable experiences—from exploring Helsinki on the Koff tram with our international friends to hosting a radio show on Radiodiodi with the board. I've also taken on roles as host on several stages, engaged with journalists from the UK, and we even organized a medieval video game-themed checkpoint ralley.

On a day-to-day basis, my time is largely occupied by meetings with the executive board and other staff at the KY office. We meet twice a week in what we call “Morning Schools,” where we discuss important topics and make big and small decisions. Our board has been keen on asking questions like, "Why are we doing this and to whom?" or "What would our members truly like to see?"

I also regularly meet with key stakeholders such as the School of Business, Suomen Ekonomit, and aTalent. My role is to ensure that KY’s resources are used efficiently, that the board is well-supported, and that our members’ voices are heard throughout the association.

It's been a privilege to serve in this role with a fantastic board, friends made this year. It’s a fact that the chair can only provide direction—it's the people you work with who define the success of the year. The people around me are the main reason I've enjoyed this year so much, but I've also had the opportunity to shape the role to suit me, a conscientious yapper, which is unique, fruitful and has made me learn and grow like never before. I believe that in all roles on the board, the year will reflect what you make of it.

My tips and tricks for applying:

• If you haven't been part of for example subcommittees or committees, don't worry. What truly matters is your motivation and willingness to learn. Please reach out to us (the Board) with any questions - we're here to help.
• Espilä’s doors are open every Monday through Thursday from 10 to 16. Pop in, have some coffee, and see what our daily work looks like.
• Discover the real reasons you want to apply; if prestige is your main motivation, the year will feel very long. 
• KY board responsibilities can be time-consuming, but in the end it is worth it. If you're even considering it, don't hesitate to apply.
• And as always in life, be yourself :3
