I remember the feeling of excitement and anxiety when I was thinking about applying for the KY board last fall. After a busy year on a sub-committee’s board, I still felt motivated and enthusiastic about doing more volunteering with KY. I’m really bad at making decisions, big or small, and applying for the board was no different. I wanted to apply, but I thought I would perform better the next year, once I had gathered more knowledge and experience. Even though I didn’t feel qualified for the job at the time, many people told me that the role and the work related to it weren’t rocket science—anyone could do it with the right attitude. At the last moment, I thought, “fuck it, we ball,” and through some difficulties, I managed to send in my application.
Even though I didn’t know much and didn’t have the sharpest answers to the burning questions, I was elected—yay! And thankfully I was, because this year has been memorable, to say the least. Even though I didn’t know anyone beforehand, we’ve become a tight group where we match each other's freaks. Of course, I hoped to make new friends with the people on the board, but I never imagined how close these people would become to me or how much fun we would have this year. It took some time to get to know each other, but now I feel like I’ve made friendships that will last much longer than just this year.
