Communications Coordinator's blog

The role of Communications Coordinator offers a good mix of routine, flexibility and surprises. There are tasks you do every week, such as the weekly newsletter, but throughout the year a lot of unexpected things happen which can require sudden creative input, a cool head or quick reactions. At the same time, planning and scheduling is crucial in this job.

One year ago I had just finished my military service, which I had completed right before finishing my bachelor’s degree. I had some prior experience in the KY community and knew I still wanted to contribute to the community which had given me a family four years ago. Therefore applying to the KY’s office, of which I had heard so much, was an obvious choice. Not only would I have a stable source of income for the year, but I would also have the opportunity to get to know new friends after a gap year.

Working as the Communications Coordinator offers genuine work experience for anyone interested in working in communications or marketing in the future. You make sure critical information reaches our 5000 members and that communication is done in an organized and accessible manner. As the Communications Coordinator you have the opportunity to develop KY’s communications according to your vision. In addition, you learn concrete skills such as using Canva and Adobe’s programs.

What I really like about my role is how the job can adapt according to the applicant’s strengths. I have prior experience in photo and video production and thus I’ve made the effort to develop KY’s photo and video content. One of my favourite things I’ve done this year were the KY Autocomplete Interviews! What’s important for a Communications Coordinator is to be punctual and have genuine interest in developing KY’s communications and presence.

A major bonus of being the Communications Coordinator is getting to be Master’s Committee’s (MC) vice chair. Master’s Committee is responsible for organising events for KY’s master’s students. This type of committee work is so much fun and gives you a close group of friends.

KY Office, or Espilä, is really unique as a workplace. It is so refreshing to come to work and not feel down about it in the morning. Being greeted by your colleagues, who have become some of your best friends, is simply heartwarming. The KY Office offers so much more than just work. You get a group of friends to do all sorts of things in the free time and also having fun during work days.

If you have any questions about my role or anything else related to working at KY’s office, don’t be afraid to hit me up!
