It is election time! KY’s and AYY’s elections for representative councils – the highest decision making organs – will be held next autumn. Representative councils make decisions which affect all of us, especially now that KY and business students have come closer to the Aalto community. This said, it is more important than ever that business students vote and run for the candidates next autumn. Let us make sure that our voices will be heard also in the coming years!
On this page you can find all the basic information regarding upcoming elections and KY’s and AYY’s representative councils.
The Representative Council (RepCo, edustajisto or “edari” in Finnish) is the highest decision-making body of KY. Its purpose is to make sure that KY is acting in the best interest of its members.
The Representative Council consists of KY members who are eager to have an influence on the actions of KY and the future of our community. The Council determines what KY is, what it stands for and what KY actually does today and in the years to come. The Council operates at the very heart of KY, which makes it a great viewpoint to all that’s happening in our community!
Every member of KY is eligible to vote and stand for the elections. The working language of the Council is English so Finnish skills are not required. The Representative Council operates through meetings in Espoo, which are held approximately once a month, excluding summer.
The duties of the Representative Council include choosing the Board of KY as well as the Executive Director, approving the yearly action plan and budget, as well as making numerous one-off decisions based on the agenda of the council.
In the term 2020-2021, the Representative Council has been for example discussing and making decisions regarding the Student Center, if KY Association should focus on more responsible investment and what KY’s next five-year strategy should look like.

The Representative Council of AYY has the highest decision-making power in the student union. It consists of 45 members and it decides on AYY’s major directions, strategic goals, guidelines and opinions. These include the Student Union’s strategy, values, rules, policy papers and the up to 17-million-euro budget.
Every member of AYY is eligible to vote and stand for the elections. The working language of the Council is Finnish but meetings and materials are also translated into Swedish and English. The Representative Council operates through meetings in Espoo, which are held approximately once a month, excluding summer.
AYY’s Representative Council consists of electoral alliances that are formed based on the members’ study background in different schools in Aalto or their political views. As the representative council should reflect all AYY’s members, it is important that all aspects of the community are represented. This means that as a representative, you are not required to be actively involved in activities outside of KY to do your job well.
Just like at KY’s Representative Council, the duties include choosing the Board of AYY as well as the Executive Director, approving the yearly action plan and budget, not forgetting the numerous one-off decisions based on the agenda of the council.
In the term 2020-2021, the Representative Council has been for example discussing and making decisions regarding the Student Center, what kind of volunteer opportunities are offered at AYY through the community structures project and whether AYY should publish a student media.

The Representative Councils, both KY’s and AYY’s, are elected every two years. The next Representative Council elections will be held in autumn 2021. The terms of the Representative Councils elected in 2021 starts in November 2021 and ends in December 2023.
The nomination of candidates will be open in the autumn. The electoral alliance for business students at the AYY’s representative council is called Kylterirengas.
Every member of KY is eligible to vote and stand for the elections. Respectively, AYY’s members can vote and stand for its elections. Finnish skills are not required. One can put themselves forward in the autumn and the dates will be announced later.
In order to run as a candidate, you need to fill a form. There are separate forms for both elections, and they will be available when the nomination of candidates is open in the autumn. Late submissions are not accepted.
The form for KY elections is to be sent in electronic format to the Central Elections Committee or alternatively returned to the member services in Otaniemi or the election responsibles at Mikkeli campus.
If you are not in Finland during the elections, you need to have an agent who is proving your candidacy and represents you if needed. The agent’s information needs to be included in the nomination form.
The form for AYY’s elections is to be returned to AYY’s service point. When you run as a candidate to AYY’s Council as a member of Kylterirengas, write the council group name to the “Name of the alliance spot” in the nomination form.
The elections are held fully electronically. Exact advance and actual voting days and information about the voting system will be released later.
The central elections committee consists of chair, 3 members and their deputy members. Its duty is to ensure that KY’s Representative Council election happens according to KY’s rules.
