Henrik’s year as the Chairman of the KY Board

Do you want to have a stress-free year with loads of free time, spending your days doing the same things over and over again. Well if you do, then being the chairman of KY maybe is not the position for you.

Let me start by saying that being the chairman of the KY board this year has simply been the best thing that I have ever done. By far. You really can’t find an organisation like KY anywhere. I truly believe that KY is the best student organisation in the world. The things that I’ve had the opportunity to do this year are just amazing, but really it is the people that I’ve had the privilege of working with. My awesome board, the fantastic KY office and the volunteers who make KY. The people around you are the number one thing and this could be called the KY spirit.

The most important job of the chairman is to make sure that KY is going to the right direction, motivate and lead people to achieve those goals and represent our community in various occasions. But this is just a scratch of the surface. In reality during this year I have been a leader, a columnist, motivational speaker, lobbyist, advocacy worker, recruiter, chef, strategist, consultant, brand ambassador, etc. The list goes on and on proving the point that there is no way that I could describe this position in a one blog post. One thing that I have noticed this year is that there is no limitations to what the chairmanship really includes. This position gives you as much as you put effort into it.

I know that there are many of you thinking about applying to the KY board and trying to make the decision by creating a pros & cons list. Well here is mine.

Pros: the huge amount of responsibility (can’t really find it in any job position/internship). The most awesome work environment and the people around you. Not a single day is similar, you will definitely not get bored. Developing as a person, after the year you have grown and matured as a person. And of course this is a rather huge CV tag, Finland is a small country and having been in the KY board has big notion with the companies.

Cons: yea your studies progress will slow, not denying that. The year will be long and time consuming. Some times you won’t get enough sleep and the deadlines will pile up. But you will survive.

You can and you should apply to the KY board for the reason of getting practical experience and other self made reasons but one should only apply for the former of the board because of the fire raging for KY inside of you. Of course everyone should have and has selfish reasons for applying, for example I wanted to get more leadership experience. But the cliché reason for applying because of the passion for the organization is in a way true. This compensation or the amount of responsibility doesn’t carry you through the year. It is the inner motivation and the people around you. You have to breath and live through KY. But that is what makes this the best thing that I have ever done.

To the end a small reference to the Murican elections for the potential former of the board: Don’t build walls, rather bridges. Internationality is one of our corner stones. Don’t call anyone crooked, that chicken is gonna come home to roost, remember that you will represent voices of all the members. But do make KY great again!

Do give me a call or send a message, let’s talk more about the subject if and when you are interested in applying!

With heart full of KY love and a hint of nostalgia,

Henrik Kekarainen

Chairman of the Board 2016
