During the past few days, there has been discussion in the media and social media about harassment, sexism and belittling women in the student culture. We at KY are very content that these topics are brought forward. Only through honest conversation we can recognize our shortcomings and make our student community better.

In our community, harassment or behavior that is dismissing women or any other groups of people is not tolerated. All wrongdoings that come to our attention are taken seriously, discussed with the relevant parties and acted upon. In all cases, we offer our help and support – if you ever encounter any improper behavior, please do not hesitate to contact us!

During this year, we have made actions to make sure that everybody could feel safe in our community and enjoy their time at KY. Last spring, we renewed our Code of Conduct, and renewed Kiljukaula Songbook will be published next year. In addition, we have put emphasis on the trainings’ of our volunteers throughout the year.

Nevertheless, as it has been clear from the ongoing conversation, these actions have not been enough. There is still a lot of work to be done in order for everybody to feel safe at KY.

We want to apologize for all the wrongdoings you might have encountered in Dammarit or in any other KY event. Organizing Dammarit and Herrarit will be considered carefully in the future and they won’t be organized in their current form.

We hope that this is a wake up call for all of us and a beginning of an honest conversation; a starting point to think about our own behavior and reconsider our culture and traditions. In the end, the courage to challenge old and create new is an essential part of KY’s student culture. We have to make sure that our culture is up to date and everybody can feel safe in our community.

We would also like to hear your take on how we could make our community a better place for all of us. This is why we have created an anonymous feedback form where you can give us feedback (See KY Today Facebook Group to be able to access the feedback form).

If you wish to discuss these issues in person, you can always contact us through mail, text or cell phone.
