For many mursus tutor is the first person they get to know from the university. Tutor is at the same time a role model and a friend for the new mursus. Therefore, the role of the tutor is very important. Tutoring is also a good way to learn more about our student community, make new friends and get some experience on group leading and time management. Furthermore, as a tutor you get the opportunity to relive the orientation week again!
Tutoring takes some time during the spring, summer and fall. Especially during the orientation week the attendance is mandatory. The tutors are selected based on the application form and the interview. The criteria for being a tutor is that the applicant needs to be suitable for tutoring, motivated, have time for tutoring and have a positive attitude towards studying and student life activities. Besides these, the credits of the applicants will be checked, because in order to tell about studies, you also should have done some studying yourself 😉
Here’s a list of tutoring trainings and events. Besides these, there’s also going to be compulsory summer assignments. If you have prior experience in tutoring in Aalto BIZ, your workload will be a bit lighter. When applying to be a tutor, you agree to participate in the trainings. If you are currently in exchange or in the army, you can compensate the missed tutor events with compensatory assignments.

Every year approximately 200 new master students start their studies in Aalto BIZ. Though they have studied somewhere else before, they need tutors to integrate into our community, and in case of international students, into a foreign country and culture. Note that even if you are a third year student and finishing your bachelor studies this spring, you can still apply to be a master’s tutor! Master’s students have larger tutor groups, and there might be more than one tutor per group, because the group divination is based on the study programmes of the arriving master’s students. Master’s tutoring requires less time than bachelor’s or exchange tutoring, and is more peer tutoring and making new friends, because master’s tutors probably meet their mursus in mutual classes.
Every semester over a hundred foreign students arrive on exchange in Aalto BIZ, and they need help and guidance. Activities for exchange students tend to be mind-blowing and eventful, so if you are looking for action and international friends, exchange tutoring is for you. Exchange tutor meets up the arriving exchange students at the airport when they arrive and helps them in practical matters of integrating into a foreign country and culture. Preferably exchange tutors continue tutoring in January, when Aalto BIZ welcomes again new exchange students.
Tutor is the first contact of new mursus to studying and student life. Tutor is an example, guide and inspiration for mursus, and the task is both challenging and rewarding. Surely everyone remembers their own tutor and first days in Aalto BIZ – why not experience all that again from tutor’s perspective?
Open Uni tutors are mainly same as bachelor’s tutors, but they have a large group of Open Uni mursus that they tutor together. Open Uni mursus have carried out their first year studies in open university, and they have received their student place based on their study success in open university. Requirements for Open Uni tutor are the same as for bachelor’s tutor, though knowledge and experience of open university is an advantage!
