Company of the Week: Finnair – Head of Business Control at Aurinkomatkat

Somewhere, over the rainbow – Welcome onboard Finnair!

My career at Finnair started in January 2010 – it’s been an amazing seven-year journey full of great experiences and people. Finnair has given me a lot, and I feel grateful for the journey so far. I have been lucky to work in interesting and challenging positions in Finnair’s finance organization, and I have learned a lot from my talented colleagues and about the airline industry in general. Also, I have made many good friends, found the love of my life, and travelled around the world with my two toddlers.

How is it to work for Finnair?

I think there is one word to best describe the past years: change. The company has been in continuous motion: competition in the aviation industry is getting more difficult, and the changing operating environment sets new challenges to adjust in a rapid mode throughout the organization. An ambitious, though calm, mindset is an asset to get results!

Thanks to the successful Asian strategy, Finnair has increased its long-haul fleet, and during 2017 we are expecting to receive four more new Airbus 350 airplanes. We are targeting to continue profitable growth, and to offer our customers a unique Nordic experience.

What is my background?

As a HSE alumni, I studied accounting and business law in Helsinki School of Economics, currently Aalto University School of Business. After graduating in December 2009, I received a job offer from Finnair (the best Christmas present ever!), and started there in January 2010 as an Internal Auditor. During the past seven years, I have worked in various finance positions, for example as the Business Controller for Finnair Plus, and I have lead a Revenue Control team.

Currently, I work as Head of Business Control for Finnair’s subsidiary Aurinkomatkat and I am part of its inspiring and talented management team. Aurinkomatkat is the second largest tour operator in Finland, and during 2016, we offered memorable holiday experiences to almost 200 000 customers. In 2016, Aurinkomatkat revenue totaled 180 m€ and it employed around 170 people.

In my current role, my main task is to support and challenge our business by setting and ensuring the delivery of the financial targets, forecasting & analyzing the financial performance and challenging the strategical actions to enable profitable growth in line with the Finnair Group.

How to get onboard?

Finnair is a great company to work for, and I feel that the sky is open for everyone with positive, curious attitude, and a bit of sparkle in the eyes. A tip for student times: besides the social networking, try to get as much experience from the working life as possible! Practicing the things you read in books in real life (e.g. for accounting students: accounts payable, bookkeeping) will be a highly valuable asset for the future!
